Feasts and Food

Feasts in the SCA generally take the route of either a fully researched, prepared and served meal or a potluck feast of some variety.

For the fully served meal or the Potluck you need to bring your feast gear: plate, bowl, cutlery and mug/goblet, and perhaps table linens/candles, etc to make your table setting nice.

For a potluck feast, however, everyone is expected to bring a contribution to the meal, and these are usually, but not always, served up buffet style.

There will usually be a list or sign-up sheet so you have an idea what to bring.

But what to bring? SCA feasts differ from modern meals – we are trying to create a medieval ambience and the food should reflect that. To help with that we have gathered some great sites with info and tips for you.

And speaking of medieval ambience – while it is perfectly okay to transport your foods in Tupperware and such, it really makes it so much nicer when it is served in a more Period style. Consider bringing a nice pottery or wood serving bowl, a metal tray or some other vessel for serving- even a basket to nestle that Tupperware into makes a great visual and helps set the scene, and don’t forget serving utensils – our rented halls often do not provide them.

It is also very important to include a card listing all of the ingredients or the original ingredients label for purchased items. Many of our friends have dietary restrictions or life-threatening allergies that make this step the difference between eating with us or being left out.
